Blue Revolution: There are immense opportunities for fish farming in the rivers flowing from the coastal regions to the Himalayas in the country. The fisheries sector provides enormous employment and self-employment opportunities in terms of biodiversity. This region plays a crucial role in strengthening the economy of the people. Himachal Pradesh is blessed with rivers that originate from glaciers.

These rivers enrich the Mountainous and semi-plain regions. The state has several perennial rivers, including the Beas, Satluj, and Ravi, which have numerous tributaries and subsidiary streams. These rivers serve as habitats for various species of cold-water fish, such as Schizothorax, Golden Mahseer, and exotic trout.

The successful implementation of the ambitious Indo-Norwegian Trout Farming Project in the state has generated interest among the people of Himachal Pradesh in utilizing their water resources using advanced techniques. The rearing and production of important fish species in Govind Sagar and Pong Dam, Chamera, and Ranjit Sagar reservoirs provide an opportunity for local communities to strengthen their economy.

Considering the immense possibilities of fish farming in Himachal Pradesh, the state government is encouraging fish farming and related businesses in the state and implementing various schemes in this direction. The government is preparing an extensive action plan to increase the income of fish farmers by promoting backyard fish farming, cage culture, re-circulatory aquaculture systems, and other technology-based fish farming methods.
